In the Spirit of our Motto: By Serving We Make a Difference
The Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, Knights of Malta, Federation of the Autonomous Priories (KMFAP) held its 51st International Investiture Ceremony in Malta from 4 to 6 October 2024.
This prestigious event, deeply rooted in ancient tradition, was dedicated to invest postulants as new Knights and Dames of the Order. Celebrated in an atmosphere of joy and camaraderie, it served not only to welcome new members but also to strengthen the bonds among existing ones, reaffirming the Order’s enduring mission, principles, and traditions. After the challenges of the global pandemic, the in-person reunion of the members from various national priories and langues brought immense joy and a renewed sense of unity, reinforcing the shared values that define the Order.
The aim of this traditional gathering, held in a festive and joyful atmosphere, was to strengthen the sense of community among members and to reinforce the Order’s commitment to its mission, while upholding its long-standing principles and traditions.
Brief History of the Order of the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem: from its Inception to Malta
Malta holds profound historical significance for the Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, as the Knights’ 268-year presence on the island left an indelible mark on both the Order and the Maltese people.
Over the centuries, the Knights faced numerous challenges and relocations. After the fall of the Holy Land in 1291, they moved first to Cyprus and then, in 1310, to the island of Rhodes, where they built a formidable naval force and resided for 215 years. In 1523, following a long siege by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, they were forced to leave Rhodes.
Their journey brought them to Malta in 1530, when the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, King of Spain, granted the islands of Malta, Gozo, Comino, and Tripoli (in present-day Libya) to the Order of Saint John. Thus, Malta became their new home after prior displacements from Jerusalem, Acre, Cyprus, and Rhodes. The Knights remained on Malta until 1798, leaving behind a rich and valuable heritage.
During their stay, they fortified the islands, built the city of Valletta, and constructed an extensive system of forts and bastions crucial for defending Europe from the expanding Ottoman Empire. The defence of Malta against the Ottoman invasion in 1565, known as the Great Siege of Malta, stands as a defining moment of their bravery and military prowess, significantly influencing Mediterranean and European history.
Beyond military achievements, the Order played a pivotal role in fostering cultural, artistic, and architectural advancements, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of Baroque architecture and art. Their influence is still evident in numerous historical landmarks that serve as enduring testaments to their presence on the island. The establishment of the Sacra Infermeria hospital in Valletta underscores their ongoing commitment to medical and social care – a legacy that remains a source of pride and inspiration.
The Knights’ rule in Malta ended in 1798 when Napoleon Bonaparte’s forces launched an amphibious invasion, swiftly taking control of the islands. This marked the end of the Order’s independent state in Malta after 268 years. Shortly thereafter, the British assumed control and ruled Malta until its independence in 1964 and the proclamation of the Republic in 1974. In 2024, Malta celebrated the 60th anniversary of its independence and the 50th anniversary of becoming a republic.
For the Order of Saint John, 2024 also marked the 226th anniversary of the end of its sovereign rule in Malta. The Treaty of Amiens, signed in 1802, contained provisions for the reinstatement of the Knights’ independent state, but these were never realized. Nevertheless, the Order’s legacy continues to be celebrated in Malta and across Europe as a testament to its significant historical and cultural contributions. In 2018, Valletta – the city founded by the Knights of Saint John – was honoured as the “European Capital of Culture.”

Traditionally observed as a period of meditation, this session included an informative lecture by the Grand Master, recounting the historical significance of the night before an Investiture Ceremony in medieval times. He provided insights into the Order’s history, enduring traditions, and symbolic elements, such as:
• The 8-pointed white cross
• The Red and Blue capes, received during the knighting process
• The knighting sword and the Golden Spur
• The knightly attire
• The moral principles upheld by the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem
The Grand Master emphasized that the path to knighthood was a transformative journey, requiring both spiritual and physical preparation. These traditions ensure that postulants are ready for the responsibilities and challenges of knighthood, instilling values of honour, discipline, resilience, and dedication to the Order’s mission of protecting the needy and vulnerable.
He also encouraged postulants to consider the areas in which they wished to contribute after joining the Order, reinforcing the humanitarian commitment that has defined KMFAP’s mission worldwide since the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem’s establishment in the mid-11th century.

Day of Investiture: 5th October 2024, Saturday
It is a great pleasure and honour to return to the roots of the Order and a privilege to host our knighthood ceremonies in Malta, in a truly unique and authentic place, the former Sacra Infermeria in Valletta from the 16th century. A leading hospital and medical facility, built and operated by the Knights of Saint John, it was considered the best hospital in all of Europe at the time. We are very proud of its history, and we recalled the memory of our brave knights and great predecessors who served in the hospital and provided excellent medical care to all who needed it. The third level of the historical building has a comprehensive museum (currently under reconstruction), depicting the history of the former hospital and the work of the care-giving Knights and Dames as medical staff.
Venue of the Ceremony: La Valette Hall of Sacra Infermeria – The Mediterranean Conference Centre (MCC)
The 51st International Knighthood Ceremony of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, Knights of Malta, Federation of the Autonomous Priories (KMFAP) took place in the very impressive La Valette Hall of MCC with more than 250 persons in attendance, organised by the team members of the International Event Organising Committee of KMFAP.
La Valette Hall was full of family members of the postulants, the knights and other guests waiting for the ceremony to begin. It is a great filling and unique experience to be present in a magnificent 155-meter-long hall, beautifully decorated with the symbols of the Order, dominated by red, the colour of KMFAP.
The use of the former Sacra Infermeria to host knighthood ceremonies for the Sovereign Order of the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem not only pays homage to the rich heritage of the Knights of St. John but also allows for the perpetuation of their legacy and values in a space that bears witness to their enduring impact on Malta and the wider European historical landscape.
The Sacra Infermeria, with its storied past as a prominent hospital and medical facility during the Knights’ tenure in Malta, holds notable cultural and historical significance to the Order and the Maltese people. The transformation of this historic building into the Mediterranean Conference Centre (MCC) is a testament to its adaptability and resilience, allowing it to continue serving a meaningful purpose in modern times. The fact that it has achieved international reputation as a venue for high-level international events further underscores its importance as a symbolic and functional space. The aura of the past that still lingers within the walls of the MCC, adorned with the banners of the Order’s esteemed Grand Masters, undoubtedly adds a sense of grandeur and reverence to the investiture ceremonies. This setting helps to evoke continuity and connection to the traditions and values upheld by the Order throughout its long and illustrious history.
Ceremony of Investiture
The knighthood ceremony is a deeply emotional and momentous occasion in the life of a worthy candidate. The investiture holds great historical and cultural significance, symbolizing recognition, honour, and valour. The venue is arranged and decorated to reflect the prestige and dignity of this solemn event.
With the sound of a fanfare, the ceremony commenced with the Processional Entrance. The postulants, dressed in black tuxedos, entered alongside the members of the Order in red capes, followed by priors, grand priors of various countries, and government representatives. The procession concluded with the Grand Knighting Officials, led by the Masters of Ceremony: Sir Norbert Abonyi, Knight of Malta and Sir Attila Kotlár, Grand Officer Knight of Cyprus, Commander of the Hungarian Unit of the Magisterial State Guard, accompanied by the music of Mozart.
This was followed by the Greeting of the Investing Sword and the Saluting of the Flags, as the national anthems of the Republic of Malta and the KMFAP were played.
After taking his place on the stage, the Grand Master, accompanied by the Lieutenant General and Prime Minister on his right, and the Grand Prior of the Republic of Malta on his left, extended his warm greetings to the distinguished international audience with over 250 attendees. He expressed his pleasure at the impressive turnout for this annual ceremony, which is held once a year in Malta.

In keeping with our moral tradition, we honour our deceased Knights and Great Predecessors, paying tribute to their achievements and remembering their legacy, that we respect and preserve as a duty. We also extend our prayers for the health and recovery of ill members who could not be present.
