On 13 December, Malta marked its 50th anniversary since it became a Republic in 1974. On the occasion of the Republic Day celebrations, numerous people received honours and nine people were appointed to the National Order of Merit (the Republic’s highest form of recognition) by President Myriam Spiteri Debono during an award ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Valletta, Malta.
The honours are announced each year on Republic Day and are presented to individuals who “distinguish themselves in different fields of endeavour”. Appointments are made on the proposals of the Nominations Committee, and on the recommendation of the Prime Minister to the President.
